In the shadow of Buick’s three major product announcements today, GMC’s news was minor. GM’s truck and SUV division is considering a gussied-up Denali version of the Acadia crossover. This is not a surprise given that there was a Denali version of the Acadia’s predecessor, the Envoy. Asked if an Acadia Denali would compete with the Buick Enclave, which is essentially also a fancier Acadia, Buick and GMC general manager Susan Docherty said that the target audience is totally different. The Acadia buyer is a decade older than the Enclave buyer. Who would have guessed?
GMC showed off a small, boxy concept that looks like a slightly butcher version of boxy car/crossovers like the Honda Element and Scion xB. What we saw was only a concept, and the GMC folks weren’t even sure what platform it could ride on. Still, they indicated that they have a strong desire to play in that space with a “premium” entry, so stay tuned.
