2011 BMW 1-series Updated with Single-Turbo N55 Inline-6, Dual-Clutch Transmission – Car News

By On January 29th, 2010

The 1-series menu now includes a new engine, a new transmission, and—hooray!—free leather upholstery.

Give us leather upholstery any day. It’s easy to clean, is almost always paired with seat heaters, and we hate cows. (OK, we don’t really hate cows. Well, we hate the rude ones.) Nowadays, extended leather packages can be selected to cover the dashboard, infotainment controllers, and more, and Porsche buyers can even get their vent slats covered in the stuff. And so we welcome this minor bit of news: buyers of the BMW 1-series now will be able to opt for leather seats at no charge. It’s true, all 2011 1-series models can be fitted with the totally gratis Value package—previously offered on the 2009 5-series and 328i/xi—which not only adds cowhide seat coverings, but iPod integration, too.

2010 Mazdaspeed 3 – Long-Term Road Test Intro

By On January 29th, 2010

2010 Mazdaspeed 3

Our long-term fleet is always better with a good hot hatch.

Late last year, the Mazdaspeed 3 went to the tailor and—shazam!—came out as the updated 2010 model. As before, it shares a lot of body parts with the Mazda 3 on which it is based, with a few sporty tweaks like the hood scoop that feeds the top-mounted intercooler. The intercooler and the turbocharged 2.3-liter direct-injection four-cylinder beneath it are unchanged from the previous-gen model.

Jump-starting the Lancer Ralliart (Some Disassembly Required) [Long-Term Logbook]

By On January 29th, 2010

2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart underhood

Our long-term 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart doesn’t seem to like winter. Stepping from my house into the brisk (5-degree!) Michigan air this morning, I noticed the head- and taillights of our Lancer slowly and faintly flashing on and off. I wonder if the battery’s dead. I approached, grabbed the door handle, and the keyless entry unlocked the door. A good sign. I dropped into the Recaro driver’s seat, turned the ignition knob, and nothing. Bad. Very, very bad.

I went into my garage and pulled out a set of jumper cables. After looking under the hood, it was clear I needed to consult the owner’s manual for instructions on how to access the battery. Unlike the Evo, which stores its battery in the trunk, the Ralliart’s battery is up front and obscured by intake plumbing to feed the turbo. That intake piece has to be removed to get to the battery. Removal requires a Phillips-head screwdriver. Back to the garage I went.

2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart intake plumbing screwsOne of the screws came out with no trouble. The other (shown here on the left) just kept spinning inside the outer clip. After fumbling in the cold with it for a few minutes, I decided that it was time for the drill. Another trip to the garage and I had the screw/clip drilled out. With the intake removed, I then had to undo two thumb screws to pull the battery cover. With that out of the way, I managed a successful jump-start (success was assured—Car and Driver is part of the Jumpstart Automotive Group. Go JAG!), drove to work, and left it running in the parking lot to charge. The worst part is that all of this annoyance could have been avoided if Mitsubishi had included a flap on the battery cover to allow access to the positive terminal without the need for power tools.

What drained the battery? Well, I left the headlights switched on, but it’s not that simple and it’s not my fault (honest!). Even though the car yells at you to turn off the lights when you shut it off and get out, it has been our collective experience that the lights actually do turn themselves off, and the owner’s manual confirms that the car is equipped with an auto cut-off system for the lights to prevent this very scenario from taking place. The auto cut-off feature can be turned off by the dealer, so we’ll have them check that it’s functioning correctly the next time the car is in for service.

We’ll have to run some more tests—i.e. try leaving the lights on and check if they do, in fact, go off—to determine what’s up. My mostly uneducated guess is that the extremely cold weather had some part in this, since I am almost certain that the lights were off when I left the car and no other members of my household noticed a car parked in the street with its lights on or flashing.

One final message: Do not tell your co-workers that you’ve left a vehicle running in the parking lot. Said vehicle will not be there when you return.

Ken Block’s Rally Ford Fiesta Makes Debut at Sno*Drift Rally

By On January 29th, 2010

Ford-Fiesta-Rally-Car

Pro rally driver and all-around hoon Ken Block will compete in Rally America’s season opener in a Ford Fiesta rally car at this weekend’s Sno*Drift rally in northern Michigan.

Sure, the rally car is based on the Euro-spec hatchback that will make its way to our shores as the 2011 Ford Fiesta. But that’s where the similarities end. Block’s car has been heavily modified for rallying and employs a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine capable of making 490 hp, although it will be restricted to around 330 hp to comply with Rally America regulations.

Three similar Ford Fiestas came up victorious at last summer’s X Games Rally competition. DC Shoes co-founder Block formerly drove a Subaru WRX STI.

Pininfarina Will Debut Roadster Concept at Geneva Auto Show

By On January 29th, 2010

Pininfarina-Concept

Storied Italian designer house Pininfarina will use the Geneva auto show to unveil a concept roadster based on Alfa Romeo components. Details are thin on the ground, but the long-nosed design mirrors the redesigned BMW Z4, while the sketch shows wheels clearly borrowed from the Alfa Romeo 8C Spider.

Pininfarina says the concept’s debut commemorates the 80th anniversary of Pininfarina and the 100th anniversary of Alfa Romeo, which coincide in 2010. Recent cars penned by Pininfarina include the Maserati GranTurismo and its convertible sibling, the Ferrari 599GTB Fiorano, and even the Europe-only Ford Focus Coupé-Cabriolet. Expect more details from the Geneva auto show in early March.

2011 BMW X6 to Get Single-Turbo N55 Inline-6, 8-Speed Transmission – Car News

By On January 28th, 2010

2009 BMW X6 xDrive35i

More efficiency for an inefficient vehicle.

BMW is really testing our memory and powertrain-matching skills with its 2011 lineup. One of our favorite current engines is the N54 twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six, which produces 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque in nearly every model in which it’s installed. But, as you probably know, it is being gradually replaced by an evolution of that mill, the N55 single-turbo inline-six, which still displaces 3.0 liters and produces identical horsepower and torque figures. The new engine is showing up first in the 535i Gran Turismo, and also will appear in the 2011 135i, 335i, and 535i. Now there are plans to shuffle it into the 2011 X6 xDrive35i, too.

Name That Exhaust Note, Episode 24: 2009 Bentley Brooklands

By On January 28th, 2010

On Tuesday, like every Tuesday, we posted an audio recording of a mystery car’s exhaust note. To hear it again, click play above. We seem to have stumped everyone this time—admittedly, none of our own editors were able to guess this week’s car. Those who guessed turbocharged automatic were correct; It was, to the surprise of many, a 2009 Bentley Brooklands.

Like it? Didn’t think so. But don’t let that stop you from downloading the MP3 and quizzing your friends.

Honda Develops New Solar-Powered Hydrogen Fueling Station

By On January 28th, 2010

Honda-Solar-Hydrogen-Filling-Station

If you drive a fuel-cell vehicle, for example the Honda FCX Clarity, you’ll need easy access to hydrogen in order to refill the car each morning. Since there aren’t (yet) too many places where you can fill ‘er up with H2, Honda has developed a solar-powered home filling station that can partially refuel fuel-cell vehicles overnight. The device is designed for installation in a home garage and is shown here at Honda’s R&D center in L.A.

Honda says the new model is about 25 percent more efficient than previous home filling stations. Overnight, the charger takes power from the electricity grid to run a device that separates water into compressed hydrogen fuel. During the day (when it’s presumably sunny), a 6-kW solar panel pushes electricity back to the utility grid, offsetting the power used at night.

While the actual hydrogen creation is not solar-powered, Honda says the electricity used is essentially “free” because it is offset by selling renewable energy back to the utility grid during daylight hours. And that makes the charger essentially carbon-neutral.

An eight-hour overnight fill is enough to produce 1.1 pounds of compressed hydrogen, which Honda says is enough to keep a fuel-cell vehicle topped up for daily commuting. The FCX’s hydrogen tank can hold 9.0 pounds of compressed hydrogen.

Back in 2008, we learned how to refuel a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle at a commercial station.

2010 Volkswagen Golf R – First Drive Review

By On January 28th, 2010

2010-Volkswagen-Golf-R-17-2

The most spectacular Golf of all is fantastic but pricey. Will we get the chance to buy one?

Volkswagen sure knows how to please. The new, sixth-generation Golf is one of the best compact cars, a great-handling hatchback that’s comfortable, too. And we think the sportiest Golf, the 200-hp GTI, is even better—witness its inclusion on the 2010 10Best list. (The previous GTI, based on the Golf V, made the 10Best roster the three years before that.) Now Wolfsburg is adding the Golf R, an all-wheel-drive variant that is the fastest, most powerful, and most expensive Golf ever.
